In response to a community prediction challenge, we simulate the nonadiabatic dynamics of cyclobutanone using the mapping approach to surface hopping (MASH). We consider the first 500 fs of relaxation following photoexcitation to the S2 state and predict the corresponding time-resolved electron-diffraction signal that will be measured by the planned experiment. 397 ab initio trajectories were obtained on the fly with state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field using a (12,11) active space. To obtain an estimate of the potential systematic error, 198 of the trajectories were calculated using an aug-cc-pVDZ basis set and 199 with a 6-31+G* basis set. MASH is a recently proposed independent trajectory method for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics, originally derived for two-state problems. As there are three relevant electronic states in this system, we used a newly developed multi-state generalization of MASH for the simulation: the uncoupled spheres multi-state MASH method (unSMASH). This study, therefore, serves both as an investigation of the photodissociation dynamics of cyclobutanone, and also as a demonstration of the applicability of unSMASH to ab initio simulations. In line with previous experimental studies, we observe that the simulated dynamics is dominated by three sets of dissociation products, C3H6 + CO, C2H4 + C2H2O, and C2H4 + CH2 + CO, and we interpret our predicted electron-diffraction signal in terms of the key features of the associated dissociation pathways. The increasing presence of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (CF3CH2F) in the atmosphere has prompted detailed studies into its complex photodissociation behavior. Experiments focusing on CF3CH2F irradiation have unveiled an array of ions, with the persistent observation of the rearrangement product CHF2+ not yet fully understood. In this work, we combine density functional theory, coupled-cluster calculations with a complete basis set formalism, and atom-centered density matrix propagation molecular dynamics to investigate the energetics and dynamics of different potential pathways leading to CHF2+. We found that the two-body dissociation pathway involving an HF rearrangement, which was previously considered complex for CHF2+ formation, is actually straightforward but not likely due to the facile loss of HF. In contrast, our calculations reveal that the H elimination pathway, once thought of as a potential route to CHF2+, is not only comparably disadvantageous from both thermodynamic and kinetic points of view but also does not align with experimental data, particularly the lack of a rebound peak at m/z 101–102. We establish that the formation of CHF2+ is predominantly via the HF elimination channel, a conclusion experimentally corroborated by studies involving the trifluoroethylene cation CF2CHF+, a key intermediate in this process. The identification and analysis of quantum state-specific effects can significantly deepen our understanding of detailed photodissociation dynamics. Here, we report an experimental investigation on the vibrational state-mediated photodissociation of the OCS+ cation via the A2Π1/2 (ν1 0 ν3) states by using the velocity map ion imaging technique over the photolysis wavelength range of 263–294 nm. It was found that the electronically excited S+ product channel S+(2Du) + CO (X1Σ+) was significantly enhanced when the ν1 and ν3 vibrational modes were excited. Clear deviations in the branching ratios of the electronically excited S+ channel were observed when the vibrational modes ν1 and ν3 were selectively excited. The N–H photodissociation dynamics of the pyridinyl radical upon continuous excitation to the optically bright, first excited ππ* electronic state by an ultra-violet (UV) laser pulse has been investigated within the mathematical framework of optimal control theory. The genetic algorithm (GA) is employed as the optimization protocol. We considered a three-state and three-mode model Hamiltonian, which includes the reaction coordinate, R (a1 symmetry); the coupling coordinates (namely, out-of-plane bending coordinate of the hydrogen atom of azine group), Θ (b1 symmetry); and the wagging mode, Q9 (a2 symmetry). The three electronic states are the ground, ππ*, and πσ* states. The πσ* state crosses both the ground state and the ππ* state, and it is a repulsive state on which N–H dissociation occurs upon photoexcitation. Different vibrational wave functions along the coupling coordinates, Θ and Q9, of the ground electronic state are used as the initial condition for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The optimal UV laser pulse is designed by applying the GA, which maximizes the dissociation yield. We obtained over 95% dissociation yield through the πσ* asymptote using the optimal pulse of a time duration of ∼30 000 a.u. (∼725.66 fs). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bromine atom (Br) reactions lead to ozone depletion in the troposphere and stratosphere. Photodegradation of bromocarbons is one of the main sources of bromine atoms in the atmosphere. Here, we use high-level ab initio methods, including spin–orbit effects, to study the photodissociation of the CH2Br radical. All possible fragmentation pathways, namely CH2Br + hν → CH2 + Br, HCBr + H, and CBr + H2, have been analyzed. Potential-energy curves of the ground and several excited electronic states along the corresponding dissociating bond distance of each pathway have been calculated. Considering the actinic fluxes of solar irradiation in the troposphere and in the stratosphere in the relevant range of frequencies, it is found that the first five excited states of CH2Br can be accessed from the ground state. Analysis of the potential curves shows that the pathways producing CH2 + Br and HCBr + H can proceed through a fast direct dissociation mechanism, while the pathway leading to CBr + H2 involves much slower dissociation mechanisms like internal conversion between electronic states, predissociation, or tunneling through exit barriers. The main implications are that the two faster channels are predicted to be dominant, and the slower pathway is expected to be less relevant. The tropospheric and stratospheric solar actinic fluxes also allow for further dissociation of the HCBr and CBr fragments, generating additional Br atoms, provided that they survive possible collisions with other atmospheric reagents. The bond dissociation energy of FeCr+ is measured using resonance enhanced photodissociation spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap. The onset for FeCr+ → Fe + Cr+ photodissociation occurs well above the lowest Cr+(6S, 3d5) + Fe(5D, 3d64s2) dissociation limit. In contrast, the higher energy FeCr+ → Fe+ + Cr photodissociation process exhibits an abrupt onset at the energy of the Cr(7S, 3d54s1) + Fe+(6D, 3d64s1) limit, enabling accurate dissociation energies to be extracted: D(Fe–Cr+) = 1.655 ± 0.006 eV and D(Fe+–Cr) = 2.791 ± 0.006 eV. The measured D(Fe–Cr+) bond energy is 10%–20% larger than predictions from accompanying CAM (Coulomb Attenuated Method)-B3LYP and NEVPT2 and coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples electronic structure calculations, which give D(Fe–Cr+) = 1.48, 1.40, and 1.35 eV, respectively. The study emphasizes that an abrupt increase in the photodissociation yield at threshold requires that the molecule possesses a dense manifold of optically accessible, coupled electronic states adjacent to the dissociation asymptote. This condition is not met for the lowest Cr+(6S, 3d5) + Fe(5D, 3d64s2) dissociation limit of FeCr+ but is satisfied for the higher energy Cr(7S, 3d54s1) + Fe+(6D, 3d64s1) dissociation limit. The precise determination of the bond dissociation energy of N2 is crucial for thermochemistry database and theoretical calculations. However, there has been ongoing debate regarding its exact value. In this study, we used the velocity map imaging method combined with an extreme ultraviolet laser to measure the threshold fragment yield (TFY) spectra of N2 in the N(2D) + N(2D) photodissociation channels. By integrating the signals within a small circular area on the fragment velocity map images, we were able to obtain TFY spectra at nine different dissociation thresholds. These spectra are rotational state-resolved for the N2(J″) molecules and spin–orbit state-resolved for the dissociation channels involving N(2D) fragments. By employing the Wigner threshold law to simulate the TFY spectra and conducting statistical analysis on the comprehensive dataset, we determined the N2 bond dissociation energy to be 78 691.09 ± 0.15 cm−1. Photodissociation of CO2 via the 1Πg state is investigated using a time-sliced velocity-mapped ion imaging apparatus combined with a tunable vacuum ultraviolet photolysis source. The main O(1D2) + CO(X1Σ+) channel is directly observed from the measured images of O(1D2) photoproducts at 129.08–134.76 nm. The total kinetic energy release spectra determined based on these images show that the energetic thresholds for the O(1D2) + CO(X1Σ+) photoproducts correspond to the thermochemical thresholds for the photodissociation of CO2(v2 = 0) and CO2(v2 = 1). One significant difference among the CO(X1Σ+, v) vibrational distributions for the predominant CO2(v2 = 0) dissociation is that the population of CO(v = 0) becomes favorable at 130.23–133.45 nm compared to the Boltzmann-like component (v > 0) that always exists at 129.08–134.76 nm. The wavelength dependences of the overall β are found to follow the variation trend of the CO(v = 0) abnormal intensity. The vibrational state-specific β values present a roughly decreasing trend with an increase in v, whereas β(v = 0) appears to be significantly larger than β(v = 1) at 130.23–133.45 nm compared to 134.76 and 129.08 nm. The non-statistical CO(v = 0) with larger β values at 130.23–133.45 nm implies that an additional pathway may open through the conical intersection coupling to the dissociative 21A′ state, except for the ever-existing pathway that yields the Boltzmann-like component. In contrast, at 129.08 nm, the restoration of the statistical equilibrium in the CO(X1Σ+, v) vibrational distribution may be caused by the emergence of novel dissociation pathways arising from the participation of the 31A″ state. The H atom tunneling dissociation dynamics of the S1 state of meta- or para-cresol has been investigated by using the picosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy in a state-specific manner. The S1 state lifetime (mainly due to the H atom tunneling reaction) is found to be mode-dependent whereas it quickly converges and remains constant as the rapid intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) starts to participate in the S1 state relaxation with the increase of the S1 internal energy (Eint). The IVR rate and its change with increasing Eint have been reflected in the parent ion transients taken by tuning the total energy (hνpump + hνprobe) just above the adiabatic ionization threshold (so that the dissipation of the initial mode-character could be monitored as a function of the reaction time), indicating that the mode randomization rate into the S1 isoenergetic manifolds exceeds the tunneling rate quite early in terms of Eint for m-cresol (≤∼1200 cm−1) or p-cresol (≤∼800 cm−1) compared to the case of phenol (≤∼1800 cm−1). Though the H atom tunneling dynamics of phenol (S1) seems to be little influenced by the methyl substitution on the either m- or p-position, the IVR rate has been found to be strongly accelerated due to the sharply-increasing (S1) density of states with increasing Eint due to the pivotal role of the low-frequency CH3 torsional mode. The photodissociation dynamics of jet-cooled ethyl radical (C2H5) via the A ̃ 2A′(3s) states are studied in the wavelength region of 230–260 nm using the high-n Rydberg H-atom time-of-flight (TOF) technique. The H + C2H4 product channels are reexamined using the H-atom TOF spectra and photofragment translational spectroscopy. A prompt H + C2H4( X ̃ 1Ag) product channel is characterized by a repulsive translational energy release, anisotropic product angular distribution, and partially resolved vibrational state distribution of the C2H4( X ̃ 1Ag) product. This fast dissociation is initiated from the 3s Rydberg state and proceeds via a H-bridged configuration directly to the H + C2H4( X ̃ 1Ag) products. A statistical-like H + C2H4( X ̃ 1Ag) product channel via unimolecular dissociation of the hot electronic ground-state ethyl ( X ̃ 2A′) after internal conversion from the 3s Rydberg state is also examined, showing a modest translational energy release and isotropic angular distribution. An adiabatic H + excited triplet C2H4(ã3B1u) product channel (a minor channel) is identified by energy-dependent product angular distribution, showing a small translational energy release, anisotropic angular distribution, and significant internal excitation in the C2H4(ã3B1u) product. The dissociation times of the different product channels are evaluated using energy-dependent product angular distribution and pump–probe delay measurements. The prompt H + C2H4( X ̃ 1Ag) product channel has a dissociation time scale of <10 ps, and the upper bound of the dissociation time scale of the statistical-like H + C2H4( X ̃ 1Ag) product channel is <5 ns. The photodissociation dynamics leading to the C–N bond cleavage in methylamine (CH3NH2) are investigated upon photoexcitation in the blue edge of the first absorption A-band, in the 198–204 nm range. Velocity map images of the generated methyl (CH3) fragment detected in specific vibrational modes, i.e., ν = 0, ν1 = 1, and ν2 = 1, through resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization, are presented along with the corresponding translational energy distributions and the angular analysis. The experimental results are complemented by high-level ab initio calculations of potential energy curves as a function of the C–N bond distance. While a similar single Boltzmann-type contribution is observed in all the translational energy distributions measured, the speed-dependent anisotropy parameter obtained through the angular analysis reveals the presence of two different mechanisms. Prompt dissociation through the conical intersection between the A ̃ 1 A ′ first excited state and the ground state located in the exit channel is, indeed, revealed as a minor channel. In contrast, slow dissociation on the ground state, presumably from frustrated N–H bond cleavage trajectories, constitutes the major reaction pathway leading to the methyl formation. The nonadiabatic interactions between the C ̃ state and neighboring electronic states of SO2 have attracted much attention; however, the predissociation mechanisms are not yet completely understood. In this work, the predissociation dynamics of SO2 via its C ̃ state have been investigated at λ = 193–201 nm by using the time-sliced velocity map ion imaging technique. The translational energy distributions and the branching ratios of the O(3PJ=2,1,0) spin–orbit products at six photolysis wavelengths have been acquired. The SO(3Σ−) product population gradually decreases in v = 0 and increases in v = 2 as the photolysis wavelength decreases. The branching ratios of O(3P J=2,1,0) products are almost similar at most wavelengths, except at 194.8 nm. Our data suggest that the predissociation between 193 and 201 nm is via an avoided crossing between the C ̃ state and the repulsive triplet 23A′ state. The state-to-state dynamical pictures shown in this work provide a rigorous test of the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the SO2 and the nonadiabatic couplings between these PESs. Understanding and controlling the chemical behavior of iron and iron oxide clusters requires accurate thermochemical data, which, because of the complex electronic structure of transition metal clusters, can be difficult to calculate reliably. Here, dissociation energies for Fe 2 + , Fe2O+, and Fe 2 O 2 + are measured using resonance enhanced photodissociation of clusters contained in a cryogenically cooled ion trap. The photodissociation action spectrum of each species exhibits an abrupt onset for the production of Fe+ photofragments from which bond dissociation energies are deduced for Fe 2 + (2.529 ± 0.006 eV), Fe2O+ (3.503 ± 0.006 eV), and Fe 2 O 2 + (4.104 ± 0.006 eV). Using previously measured ionization potentials and electron affinities for Fe and Fe2, bond dissociation energies are determined for Fe2 (0.93 ± 0.01 eV) and Fe 2 − (1.68 ± 0.01 eV). Measured dissociation energies are used to derive heats of formation ΔfH0( Fe 2 + ) = 1344 ± 2 kJ/mol, ΔfH0(Fe2) = 737 ± 2 kJ/mol, ΔfH0( Fe 2 − ) = 649 ± 2 kJ/mol, ΔfH0(Fe2O+) = 1094 ± 2 kJ/mol, and ΔfH0( Fe 2 O 2 + ) = 853 ± 21 kJ/mol. The Fe 2 O 2 + ions studied here are determined to have a ring structure based on drift tube ion mobility measurements prior to their confinement in the cryogenic ion trap. The photodissociation measurements significantly improve the accuracy of basic thermochemical data for these small, fundamental iron and iron oxide clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The correlation discrete variable representation (CDVR) enables (multilayer) multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) calculations with general potentials. The CDVR employs a set of grids corresponding to single-particle functions to efficiently evaluate all potential matrix elements appearing in the MCTDH equations of motion. In standard CDVR approaches, the number of grid points employed is tied to the number of corresponding single-particle functions. This limits the accuracy of the quadrature, which can be achieved for a given single-particle function basis. In this work, an extended CDVR approach that facilitates a numerically exact quadrature of all potential matrix elements is introduced. The number of grid points employed can be increased independent of the number of corresponding single-particle function to achieve any desired quadrature accuracy. The properties of the new scheme are illustrated by numerical calculations studying the photodissociation of NOCl and the vibrational states of CH3. Fast convergence with respect to the number of additional quadrature points is observed: Employing a single additional point in each physical or logical coordinate already ensures negligible quadrature errors. The photodissociation dynamics of methylamine (CH3NH2) upon excitation in the blue edge of the first absorption A-band, in the 198–203 nm range, are investigated by means of nanosecond pump–probe laser pulses and velocity map imaging combined with H(2S)-atom detection through resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization. The images and corresponding translational energy distributions for the H-atoms produced show three different contributions associated with three reaction pathways. The experimental results are complemented by high-level ab initio calculations. The potential energy curves computed as a function of the N–H and C–H bond distances allow us to draw a picture of the different mechanisms. Major dissociation occurs through N–H bond cleavage and it is triggered by an initial geometrical change, i.e., from a pyramidal configuration of the C–NH2 with respect to the N atom to a planar geometry. The molecule is then driven into a conical intersection (CI) seam where three outcomes can take place: first, threshold dissociation into the second dissociation limit, associated with the formation of CH3NH ( A ̃) , is observed; second, direct dissociation after passage through the CI leading to the formation of ground state products; and third, internal conversion into the ground state well in advance to dissociation. While the two last pathways were previously reported at a variety of wavelengths in the 203–240 nm range, the former had not been observed before to the best of our knowledge. The role of the CI and the presence of an exit barrier in the excited state, which modify the dynamics leading the two last mechanisms, are discussed considering the different excitation energies used. In this work, we have studied the photodissociation of the protonated derivatives of N-nitrosodimethylamine [(CH3)2N–NO] with the CASPT2 method. It is found that only one of the four possible protonated species of the dialkylnitrosamine compound absorbs in the visible region at 453 nm, that is, N-nitrosoammonium ion [(CH3)2NH-NO]+. This species is also the only one whose first singlet excited state is dissociative to directly yield the aminium radical cation [(CH3)2NHN·]+ and nitric oxide. In addition, we have studied the intramolecular proton migration reaction {[(CH3)2N–NOH]+ → [(CH3)2NH–NO]+} both in the ground and excited state (ESIPT/GSIPT); our results indicate that this process is not accessible neither in the ground nor in the first excited state. Furthermore, as a first approximation, MP2/HF calculations on the nitrosamine–acid complex indicate that in acidic solutions of aprotic solvents, only [(CH3)2NH–NO]+ is formed. Understanding vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation dynamics of Carbonyl sulfide (OCS) is of considerable importance in the study of atmospheric chemistry. Yet, photodissociation dynamics of the CS(X1Σ+) + O(3Pj=2,1,0) channels following excitation to the 21Σ+(ν1′,1,0) state has not been clearly understood so far. Here, we investigate the O(3Pj=2,1,0) elimination dissociation processes in the resonance-state selective photodissociation of OCS between 147.24 and 156.48 nm by using the time-sliced velocity-mapped ion imaging technique. The total kinetic energy release spectra are found to exhibit highly structured profiles, indicative of the formation of a broad range of vibrational states of CS(1Σ+). The fitted CS(1Σ+) vibrational state distributions differ for the three 3Pj spin–orbit states, but a general trend of the inverted characteristics is observed. Additionally, the wavelength-dependent behaviors are also observed in the vibrational populations for CS(1Σ+, v). The CS(X1Σ+, v = 0) has a significantly strong population at several shorter wavelengths, and the most populated CS(X1Σ+, v) is gradually transferred to a higher vibrational state with the decrease in the photolysis wavelength. The measured overall β-values for the three 3Pj spin–orbit channels slightly increase and then abruptly decrease as the photolysis wavelength increases, while the vibrational dependences of β-values show an irregularly decreasing trend with increasing CS(1Σ+) vibrational excitation at all studied photolysis wavelengths. The comparison of the experimental observations for this titled channel and the S(3Pj) channel reveals that two different intersystem crossing mechanisms may be involved in the formation of the CS(X1Σ+) + O(3Pj=2,1,0) photoproducts via the 21Σ+ state. Multi-state electronic dynamics at higher excitation energies is needed for the understanding of a variety of energy rich situations, including chemistry under extreme conditions, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) induced astrochemistry, and attochemistry. It calls for an understanding of three stages, energy acquisition, dynamical propagation, and disposal. It is typically not possible to identify a basis of uncoupled quantum states that is sufficient for the three stages. The handicap is the large number of coupled quantum states that is needed to describe the system. Progress in quantum chemistry provides the necessary background to the energetics and the coupling. Progress in quantum dynamics takes this as input for the propagation in time. Right now, it seems that we have come of age with potential detailed applications. We here report a demonstration to a coupled electron-nuclear quantum dynamics through a maze of 47 electronic states and with attention to the order in perturbation theory that is indicated using propensity rules for couplings. Close agreement with experimental results for the VUV photodissociation of 14N2 and its isotopomer 14N15N is achieved. We pay special attention to the coupling between two dissociative continua and an optically accessible bound domain. The computations reproduce and interpret the non-monotonic branching between the two exit channels producing N(2D) and N(2P) atoms as a function of excitation energy and its variation with the mass. We study the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photodissociation dynamics of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) by using the time sliced velocity map ion imaging technique. Experimental images of the dissociative O (3PJ=0,1,2) products were acquired at five VUV photolysis wavelengths from 133.26 to 139.96 nm that correspond to the F Rydberg state of OCS. High vibrational states of the carbon monosulfide (CS) co-products are partially resolved in the images. The product total kinetic energy releases, angular distributions, and the product state branching ratios were derived from the experimental images. Notably, it is found that the anisotropic parameters change systematically with the photolysis wavelength. The anisotropic parameters and the product state branching ratios are significantly sensitive to the J quantum number of the O (3PJ) products. The phenomenon indicates that multiple nonadiabatic pathways are strongly involved in the photodissociation processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization combined with various detection approaches and quantum chemical calculations of biologically relevant neurotransmitter prototypes, the most stable conformer of 2-phenylethylamine (PEA), and its monohydrate, PEA-H2O, to reveal the possible interactions between the phenyl ring and amino group in the neutral and ionic species. Extracting the ionization energies (IEs) and appearance energy was achieved by measuring the photoionization and photodissociation efficiency curves of the PEA parent and photofragment ions, together with velocity and kinetic energy-broadened spatial map images of photoelectrons. We obtained coinciding upper bounds for the IEs for PEA and PEA-H2O of 8.63 ± 0.03 and 8.62 ± 0.04 eV, within the range predicted by quantum calculations. The computed electrostatic potential maps show charge separation, corresponding to a negative charge on phenyl and a positive charge on the ethylamino side chain in the neutral PEA and its monohydrate; in the cations, the charge distributions naturally become positive. The significant changes in geometries upon ionization include switching of the amino group orientation from pyramidal to nearly planar in the monomer but not in the monohydrate, lengthening of the N–H⋯π hydrogen bond (HB) in both species, Cα–Cβ bond in the side chain of the PEA+ monomer, and the intermolecular O–H⋯N HB in PEA-H2O cations, leading to distinct exit channels. The spin-forbidden O(3P2) + CO(X1Σ+, v) channel formed from the photodissociation of CO2 in the low energy band centered at 148 nm is investigated by using the time-sliced velocity-mapped ion imaging technique. The vibrational-resolved images of the O(3P2) photoproducts measured in the photolysis wavelength range of 144.62–150.45 nm are analyzed to give the total kinetic energy releases (TKER) spectra, CO(X1Σ+) vibrational state distributions, and anisotropy parameters (β). The TKER spectra reveal the formation of correlated CO(X1Σ+) with well resolved v = 0–10 (or 11) vibrational bands. Several high vibrational bands that were observed in the low TKER region for each studied photolysis wavelength exhibit a bimodal structure. The CO(X1Σ+, v) vibrational distributions all present inverted characteristics, and the most populated vibrational state changes from a low vibrational state to a relatively higher vibrational state with a change in the photolysis wavelength from 150.45 to 144.62 nm. However, the vibrational-state specific β-values for different photolysis wavelengths present a similar variation trend. The measured β-values show a significant bulge at the higher vibrational levels, in addition to the overall slow decreasing trend. The observed bimodal structures with mutational β-values for the high vibrational excited state CO(1Σ+) photoproducts suggest the existence of more than one nonadiabatic pathway with different anisotropies in the formation of O(3P2) + CO(X1Σ+, v) photoproducts across the low energy band. We report the detection of a rich spectrum of more than one hundred optical emission lines of vibrationally hot molecular hydrogen (H2) from the photodissociation region (PDR) around the mini-starburst cluster NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The lines are concentrated in the spectral range |$6000 \, {{\mathring{\rm A}}}$| to |$9300 \, {{\mathring{\rm A}}}$| and have observed brightnesses ranging from 0.01 per cent to 0.4 per cent times that of the H β λ4861 hydrogen recombination line. Analysis of the spatial distribution of the H2 lines shows that they originate from a range of depths in the PDR, intermediate between the shallow layers probed by fluorescent lines of neutral nitrogen and oxygen, and the more shielded layers probed by neutral carbon recombination lines. Comparison with other PDRs shows that the relative strength of the H2 lines with respect to the [ |$\mathrm{C\, \scriptstyle I}$| ] λ8727 line increases rapidly with decreasing metallicity, being at least 40 times larger in NGC 346 than in the prototypical PDR of the Orion Bar. The internal PDR dust extinction is also found to be anomalously low in NGC 346. A separate result is the discovery of a high-ionization bow shock around the O2 star Walborn 3. The early-type star gamma Cas illuminates the reflection nebulae IC 59 and IC 63, creating two photodissociation regions (PDRs). Uncertainties about the distances to the nebulae and the resulting uncertainty about the density of the radiation fields incident on their surfaces have hampered the study of these PDRs during the past three decades. We employed far-ultraviolet (UV) – optical nebula – star colour differences of dust-scattered light to infer the locations of the nebulae relative to the plane of the sky containing gamma Cas, finding IC 63 to be positioned behind the star and IC 59 in front of the star. To obtain the linear distances of the nebulae relative to gamma Cas, we fit far-infrared archival Herschel flux data for IC 59 and IC 63 with modified blackbody curves and relate the resulting dust temperatures with the luminosity of gamma Cas, yielding approximate distances of 4.15 pc for IC 59 and 2.3 pc for IC 63. With these distances, using updated far-UV flux data in the 6–13.6 eV range for gamma Cas with two recent determinations of the interstellar extinction for gamma Cas, we estimate that the far-UV radiation density at the surface of IC 63 takes on values of G 0 = 58 or G 0 = 38 with respective values for E (B − V) for gamma Cas of 0.08 and 0.04 mag. This is a substantial reduction from the range 150 ≤ G 0 ≤ 650 used for IC 63 during the past three decades. The corresponding, even lower new values for IC 59 are G 0 = 18 and G 0 = 12. Although CH2FCl (HCFC‐31) recently became of great atmospheric importance, studies concerning its excited states are almost nonexistent. Several excited singlet states were studied (valence nσ* and Rydberg n3s, n3p, σ3s, and σ3p) through highly correlated multireference configuration interaction with singles and doubles, including extensivity correction. Comparison with the states of CH3Cl indicates a strong influence of the F atom. Potential energy curves suggest formation of an electrostatically bound complex that relaxes to a hydrogen‐bonded contact ion‐pair (HBCIP) which can decay yielding CH2F + Cl or to the ground state minimum of CH2FCl. The HBCIP has a dipole moment of 9.57 D, a CI wavefunction described as 0.65ionic + 0.20biradical and it is strongly bonded by 4.72 eV. Its H bond has characteristics of moderate and strong H bonds. Despite recent advances in glycomics, glycan characterization still remains an analytical challenge. Accordingly, numerous glycan‐tagging reagents with different chemistries were developed, including those involving acid‐base chemistry and/or free radical chemistry. Acid‐base chemistry excels at dissociating glycans into their constituent components in a systematic and predictable manner to generate cleavages at glycosidic bonds. Glycans are also highly susceptible to depolymerization by free radical processes, which is supported by results observed from electron‐activated dissociation techniques. Therefore, the free radical activated glycan sequencing (FRAGS) reagent was developed so as to possess the characteristics of both acid‐base and free radical chemistry, thus generating information‐rich glycosidic bond and cross‐ring cleavages. Alternatively, the free radical processes can be induced via photodissociation of the specific carbon‐iodine bond which gives birth to similar fragmentation patterns as the FRAGS reagent. Furthermore, the methylated‐FRAGS (Me‐FRAGS) reagent was developed to eliminate glycan rearrangements by way of a fixed charged as opposed to a labile proton, which would otherwise yield additional, yet unpredictable, fragmentations including internal residue losses or multiple external residue losses. In this theoretical study, we show how photoelectron signals generated by time-energy entangled photon pairs can monitor ultrafast excited state dynamics of molecules with high joint spectral and temporal resolutions, not limited by the Fourier uncertainty of classical light. This technique scales linearly, rather than quadratically, with the pump intensity, allowing the study of fragile biological samples with low photon fluxes. Since the spectral resolution is achieved by electron detection and the temporal resolution by a variable phase delay, this technique does not require scanning the pump frequency and the entanglement times, which significantly simplifies the experimental setup, making it feasible with current instrumentation. Application is made to the photodissociation dynamics of pyrrole calculated by exact nonadiabatic wave packet simulations in a reduced two nuclear coordinate space. This study demonstrates the unique advantages of ultrafast quantum light spectroscopy.

Radical-directed dissociation (RDD) is a fragmentation technique in which a radical created by selective 213/266 nm photodissociation of a carbon-iodine bond is reisolated and collisionally activated. In previous RDD experiments, collisional activation was effected by ion-trap collision-induced dissociation (CID). Higher-energy collisional dissociation (HCD) differs from CID both in terms of how ions are excited and in the number, type, or abundance of fragments that are observed. In this paper, we explore the use of HCD for activation in RDD experiments. While RDD-CID favors fragments produced from radical-directed pathways such as a/z-ions and side chain losses regardless of the activation energy employed, RDD-HCD spectra vary considerably as a function of activation energy, with lower energies favoring RDD while higher energies favor products resulting from cleavage directed by mobile protons (b/y-ions). RDD-HCD therefore affords more tunable fragmentation based on the HCD energy provided. Importantly, the abundance of radical products decreases as a function of increasing HCD energy, confirming that RDD generally proceeds via lower-energy barriers relative to mobile-proton-driven dissociation. The dominance of b/y-ions at higher energies for RDD-HCD can therefore be explained by the higher survivability of fragments not containing the radical after the initial or subsequent dissociation events. Furthermore, these results confirm previous suspicions that HCD spectra differ from CID spectra due to multiple dissociation events.

We consider an ensemble of diatomic molecules resonantly coupled to an optical cavity under strong coupling conditions at normal incidence. Photodissociation dynamics is examined via direct numerical integration of the coupled Maxwell–Schrödinger equations with molecular rovibrational degrees of freedom explicitly taken into account. It is shown that the dissociation is significantly affected (slowed down) when the system is driven at its polaritonic frequencies. The observed effect is demonstrated to be of transient nature and has no classical analog. An intuitive explanation of the dissociation slowdown at polaritonic frequencies is proposed. The bond strength and photodissociation dynamics of MgI+ are determined by a combination of theory, photodissociation spectroscopy, and photofragment velocity map imaging. From 17 000 to 21 500 cm−1, the photodissociation spectrum of MgI+ is broad and unstructured; photofragment images in this region show perpendicular anisotropy, which is consistent with absorption to the repulsive wall of the (1) Ω = 1 or (2) Ω = 1 states followed by direct dissociation to ground state products Mg+ (2S) + I (2P3/2). Analysis of photofragment images taken at photon energies near the threshold gives a bond dissociation energy D0(Mg+-I) = 203.0 ± 1.8 kJ/mol (2.10 ± 0.02 eV; 17 000 ± 150 cm−1). At photon energies of 33 000–41 000 cm−1, exclusively I+ fragments are formed. Over most of this region, the formation of I+ is not energetically allowed via one-photon absorption from the ground state of MgI+. Images show the observed product is due to resonance enhanced two-photon dissociation. The photodissociation spectrum from 33 000 to 38 500 cm−1 shows vibrational structure, giving an average excited state vibrational spacing of 227 cm−1. This is consistent with absorption to the (3) Ω = 0+ state from ν = 0, 1 of the (1) Ω = 0+ ground state; from the (3) Ω = 0+ state, absorption of a second photon results in dissociation to Mg* (3P°J) + I+ (3PJ). From 38 500 to 41 000 cm−1, the spectrum is broad and unstructured. We attribute this region of the spectrum to one-photon dissociation of vibrationally hot MgI+ at low energy and ground state MgI+ at higher energy to form Mg (1S) + I+ (3PJ) products. Multi-state electronic dynamics at higher excitation energies is needed for the understanding of a variety of energy rich situations, including chemistry under extreme conditions, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) induced astrochemistry, and attochemistry. It calls for an understanding of three stages, energy acquisition, dynamical propagation, and disposal. It is typically not possible to identify a basis of uncoupled quantum states that is sufficient for the three stages. The handicap is the large number of coupled quantum states that is needed to describe the system. Progress in quantum chemistry provides the necessary background to the energetics and the coupling. Progress in quantum dynamics takes this as input for the propagation in time. Right now, it seems that we have come of age with potential detailed applications. We here report a demonstration to a coupled electron-nuclear quantum dynamics through a maze of 47 electronic states and with attention to the order in perturbation theory that is indicated using propensity rules for couplings. Close agreement with experimental results for the VUV photodissociation of 14N2 and its isotopomer 14N15N is achieved. We pay special attention to the coupling between two dissociative continua and an optically accessible bound domain. The computations reproduce and interpret the non-monotonic branching between the two exit channels producing N(2D) and N(2P) atoms as a function of excitation energy and its variation with the mass. The first ππ* transition for protonated 2-, 3-, and 4-formylpyridine (FPH+) (m/z 108) is investigated by mass spectrometry coupled with photodissociation action spectroscopy at room temperature and 10 K. The photoproduct ions are detected over 35 000–43 000 cm−1, and the major product channel for 3-FPH+ and 4-FPH+ is the loss of CO forming protonated pyridine at m/z 80. For 2-FPH+, the CO loss product is present but a more abundant photoproduct arises from the loss of CH2O to form m/z 78. Plausible potential energy pathways that lead to dissociation are mapped out and comparisons are made to products arising from collision-induced dissociation. Although, in all cases, the elimination of CO is the overwhelming thermodynamically preferred pathway, the protonated 2-FPH+ results suggest that the CH2O product is kinetically driven and competitive with CO loss. In addition, for each isomer, radical photoproduct ions are detected at lower abundances. SCS-CC2/aug-cc-pVTZ Franck–Condon simulations assist with the assignment of vibrionic structure and adiabatic energies (0–0) for 2-FPH+ at 36 560 cm−1, 37 430 cm−1 for 3-FPH+, and 36 140 cm−1 for 4-FPH+, yielding an accurate prediction, on average, within 620 cm−1. Ultraviolet photodissociation processes of gas phase Mg+–NO complex were studied by photofragment ion imaging experiments and theoretical calculations for excited electronic states. At 355 nm excitation, both Mg+ and NO+ photofragment ions were observed with positive anisotropy parameters, and theoretical calculations revealed that the two dissociation channels originate from an electronic transition from a bonding orbital consisting of Mg+ 3s and NO π* orbitals to an antibonding counterpart. For the NO+ channel, the photofragment image exhibited a high anisotropy (β = 1.53 ± 0.07), and a relatively large fraction (∼40%) of the available energy was partitioned into translational energy. These observations are rationalized by proposing a rapid dissociation process on a repulsive potential energy surface correlated to the Mg(1S) + NO+(1Σ) dissociation limit. In contrast, for the Mg+ channel, the angular distribution was more isotropic (β = 0.48 ± 0.03) and only ∼25% of the available energy was released into translational energy. The differences in the recoil distribution for these competing channels imply a reaction branching on the excited state surface. On the theoretical potential surface of the excited state, we found a deep well facilitating an isomerization from bent geometry in the Franck–Condon region to linear and/or T-shaped isomer. As a result, the Mg+ fragment was formed via the structural change followed by further relaxation to lower electronic states correlated to the Mg+(2S) + NO(2Π) exit channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Examples of extracting meaningful information from image projection data using tomographic reconstruction techniques can be found in many areas of science. Within the photochemical dynamics community, tomography allows for complete three-dimensional (3D) charged particle momentum distributions to be reconstructed following a photodissociation or photoionization event. This permits highly differential velocity- and angle-resolved measurements to be made simultaneously. However, the generalized tomographic reconstruction strategies typically adopted for use with photochemical imaging—based around the Fourier-slice theorem and filtered back-projection algorithms—are not optimized for these specific types of problems. Here, we discuss pre-existing alternative strategies—namely, the simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique and Hankel Transform Reconstruction (HTR)—and introduce them in the context of velocity-map imaging applications. We demonstrate the clear advantages they afford, and how they can perform considerably better than approaches commonly adopted at present. Most notably, with HTR we can set a bound on the minimum number of projections required to reliably reconstruct 3D photoproduct distributions. This bound is significantly lower than what is currently accepted and will help make tomographic imaging far more accessible and efficient for many experimentalists working in the field of photochemical dynamics. Chemical reactions are generally assumed to proceed from reactants to products along the minimum energy path (MEP). However, straying from the MEP—roaming—has been recognized as an unconventional reaction mechanism and found to occur in both the ground and first excited states. Its existence in highly excited states is however not yet established. We report a dissociation channel to produce electronically excited fragments, S(1D)+O2(a1Δg), from SO2 photodissociation in highly excited states. The results revealed two dissociation pathways: One proceeds through the MEP to produce vibrationally colder O2(a1Δg) and the other yields vibrationally hotter O2(a1Δg) by means of a roaming pathway involving an intramolecular O abstraction during reorientation motion. Regulation of photodissociation dynamics of oriented LiH molecules in different dissociation channels is proposed based on time dependent quantum wave packet theory. The enhancement of molecular orientation on the photodissociation of LiH is obvious with our theoretical scheme. The results show that the molecular orientation in the ground state has a great effect on the angular distributions of wave packets. By using the proper laser pulses and controlling the polarization direction of the laser pulses, the enhancement of the photodissociation could be realized. After the molecular orientation, an optimal dissociation channel is observed with an improved dissociation probability. Compared with the results without molecular orientation, the maximal dissociation probability is increased by 8.1% in the indirect dissociation channel and 30.7% in the direct dissociation channel. The enhancement effect is more obvious in the direct dissociation channel, which provides a possible method to manipulate the dissociation of LiH molecules experimentally. In observational studies of infrared dark clouds, the number of detections of CO freeze-out on to dust grains (CO depletion) at the pc scale is extremely limited, and the conditions for its occurrence are, therefore, still unknown. We report a new object where pc-scale CO depletion is expected. As part of the Kagoshima Galactic Object survey with Nobeyama 45 m telescope by Mapping in Ammonia lines (KAGONMA), we have made mapping observations of NH3 inversion transition lines towards the star-forming region associated with Canis Major OB1, including IRAS 07077−1026, IRAS 07081−1028, and PGCC G224.28−0.82. By comparing the spatial distributions of NH3 (1,1) and C18O (J = 1–0), an intensity anti-correlation was found in IRAS 07077−1026 and IRAS 07081−1028 on the ∼1 pc scale. Furthermore, we obtained a lower abundance of C18O at least in IRAS 07077−1026 than in the other parts of the star-forming region. After examining high-density gas dissipation, photodissociation, and CO depletion, we concluded that the intensity anti-correlation in IRAS 07077−1026 is due to CO depletion. On the other hand, in the vicinity of the center of PGCC G224.28−0.82, the emission line intensities of both NH3 (1,1) and C18O (J = 1–0) were strongly detected, although the gas temperature and density were similar to IRAS 07077−1026. This indicates that there are situations where C18O (J = 1–0) cannot trace dense gas on the pc scale and implies that the conditional differences in which C18O (J = 1–0) can and cannot trace dense gas are unclear. Context. Analyzing multiwavelength observations of galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to the millimeter domains provides a wealth of information on the physical properties of galaxies and their evolution across cosmic time. Existing or upcoming ground-based or space-borne facilities with enhanced sensitivities and resolutions open an unprecedented window on the galaxy evolution in the early Universe. However, the derivation of galaxy properties from nebular emission lines is not trivial because the interstellar medium in a galaxy may be patchy, and emission might originate both from starburst emission regions and from partially covered photon-dominated regions. Aims. We model both the nebular continuum emission and the line emission of the spectral energy distribution for galaxies exhibiting both a HII region-like emission and emission like that from a photon-dominated regions to account for the partial shielding of the starburst emission region by dense clouds. Methods. Nebular galactic emission was modeled from far-ultraviolet to millimeter ranges in a two-sector model with an HII region and a photon-dominated region. The partial overlap of the HII region by the photon-dominated region was accounted for by a covering factor. We generated grids of emission spectra using the Cloudy photoionization code for our two-sector model. Results. We compared our models with spectral lines from different samples of galaxies for which we mixed characteristic emission from starburst regions and denser regions. We show that the infrared line ratios can constrain the density, metallicity, photoionization parameter, and the covering factor. We also built infrared diagnostic diagrams based on different infrared line ratios in which the galaxy location contains information about its physical conditions. Conclusions. The two-sector model that couples starburst emission regions and photon-dominated regions can span the existing observations. Catalytic methods to couple alkene and amine feedstocks are valuable in synthetic chemistry. The direct carbonylative coupling of alkenes and amines holds promise as a perfectly atom-economical approach to amide synthesis, but general methods remain underdeveloped. Herein, we report an alkene hydroaminocarbonylation catalyzed by unmodified, inexpensive cobalt carbonyl under mild conditions and low pressure promoted by light. Silane addition after the reaction enables sequential cobalt-catalyzed amide reduction, constituting a formal alkene hydroaminomethylation. These methods exhibit exceptional scope across both alkene and amine components with high chemo- and regioselectivity and proceed efficiently even in the absence of solvent. The formation of a hydridocobalt through photodissociation of a carbonyl ligand is proposed to enable catalytic activity under mild conditions, which addresses a long-standing challenge in catalysis. Diamondoids form a molecular class of cage-like structures and serve as a link between small, cyclic hydrocarbons and bulk nanodiamonds. Comparisons have been made between the infrared spectra of diamondoids and unidentified infrared emission bands seen in the spectra of certain stars with circumstellar disks. It is also suggested that their radical cations may contribute to features in the largely unassigned diffuse interstellar bands due to their low ionisation energy and absorption in the visible range. However, the optical spectra of these cations have only recently begun to be measured experimentally, which is required for astronomical identification. Herein, we present the first optical spectrum of the 1-cyanoadamantane radical cation (C11H15N, AdaCN+) between 275 and 1200 nm. The spectrum is obtained by electronic photodissociation (EPD) of mass-selected ions generated by electron ionisation in a tandem mass spectrometer coupled to a cryogenic trap held at 5 K. Experimental results are interpreted by (time-dependent) density functional theory calculations. The dominant fragmentation channels are HCN loss at low energies and C4H6N loss at energies above 2.9 eV. The EPD spectrum reveals broad bands that are rationalised by lifetime broadening and Franck-Condon congestion arising from geometric changes upon excitation. The search for the chemical structures that account for diffuse interstellar bands remains the main challenge in astrochemistry. It relies on experimental verification of structures obtained from stable isomers in laboratory conditions. The actual interstellar medium, however, is exposed to much harsher conditions. Herein we demonstrate the isomerisation of small, doubly charged polyaromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene obtained by electron ionisation at relatively high electron energies. We performed electronic and vibrational tagging photodissociation spectroscopy measurements. Our results show that phenanthrene dication has a broad visible spectrum, making it unsuitable for DIB search. We also detected another C14H102+ isomer, originating from the isomerisation of phenanthrene dication during the ionisation process. Hole-burning spectroscopy experiments provided the IR spectrum of an isomer which could be assigned based on DFT calculations as a fully conjugated system representing the global minimum on the C14H102+ potential energy surface. Helium tagging photodissociation action spectroscopy in the gas phase together with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy in neon matrix has been used to probe the photophysics of electrosprayed rhodamine B cation cooled to < 5 K and studied in two different minimally perturbing environments ([RhB•He]+ as well as [RhB]+ in solid neon). Helium tagging experiments were performed using a newly developed apparatus He-TAG. LIF measurements were carried out using an improved matrix-isolation spectroscopy machine Depo-II. The resulting, partially vibrationally resolved electronic spectra of the S0→S1, resp. S1→S0 transition provide benchmarks for gauging the theoretical description of this prototypical organic dye. As a first approach, we have compared our spectra to TD-DFT-based predictions of vibronic structure at the Franck-Condon (FC) and Franck-Condon Herzberg-Teller (FCHT) levels. We extend the analytic theory presented by Sternberg et al. and Bialy & Sternberg for the production of atomic hydrogen (H i) via far-ultraviolet (FUV) photodissociation at the boundaries of dense interstellar molecular (H2) clouds to also include the effects of penetrating (low-energy) cosmic rays (CRs) for the growth of the total H i column densities. We compute the steady-state abundances of the H i and H2 in one-dimensional gas slabs in which the FUV photodissociation rates are reduced by depth-dependent H2 self-shielding and dust absorption and the CR ionization rates are either constant or reduced by transport effects. The solutions for the H i and H2 density profiles and the integrated H i columns depend primarily on the ratios I UV/ Rn and ζ / Rn, where I UV is the intensity of the photodissociating FUV field, ζ is the H2 CR ionization rate, n is the hydrogen gas density, and R is the dust surface H2 formation rate coefficient. We present computations for a wide range of FUV field strengths, CR ionization rates, and dust-to-gas ratios. We develop analytic expressions for the growth of the H i column densities. For Galactic giant molecular clouds (GMCs) with multiphased (warm/cold) H i envelopes, the interior CR zones will dominate the production of the H i only if ζ ≳ 4.5 × 10 − 16 × (M GMC / 10 6 M ⊙) − 1 / 2 s−1, where M GMC is the GMC mass, and including attenuation of the CR fluxes. For most Galactic GMCs and conditions, FUV photodissociation dominates over CR ionization for the production of the H i column densities. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) is the most wildly used fragmentation technique for qualitative and quantitative determination of low molecular weight compounds (LMWC). Ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) has been mainly investigated for the analysis of peptides and lipids while only in a limited way for LMWC. A triple quadrupole linear ion trap instrument has been modified to allow ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) in the end of the q2 region enabling various workflows with and without data-dependent acquisition (DDA) combining CID and UVPD in the same LC–MS analysis. The performance of UVPD, with a 266-nm laser, is compared to CID for a mix of 90 molecules from different classes of LMWC including peptides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, metabolites, and drugs of abuse. These two activation methods offer complementary fragments as well as common fragments with similar sensitivities for most analytes investigated. The versatility of UVPD and CID is also demonstrated for quantitative analysis in human plasma of bosentan and its desmethyl metabolite, used as model analytes. Different background signals are observed for both fragmentation methods as well as unique fragments which opens the possibility of developing a selective quantitative assay with improved sample throughput, in particular for analytes present in different matrices. M82 is an archetypal starburst galaxy in the local Universe. The central burst of star formation, thought to be triggered by M82's interaction with other members in the M81 group, is driving a multiphase galaxy-scale wind away from the plane of the disk that has been studied across the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we present new velocity-resolved observations of the [C ii ] 158 μ m line in the central disk and the southern outflow of M82 using the upGREAT instrument on board SOFIA. We also report the first detections of velocity-resolved (Δ V = 10 km s−1) [C ii ] emission in the outflow of M82 at projected distances of ≈1–2 kpc south of the galaxy center. We compare the [C ii ] line profiles to observations of CO and H i and find that likely the majority (>55%) of the [C ii ] emission in the outflow is associated with the neutral atomic medium. We find that the fraction of [C ii ] actually outflowing from M82 is small compared to the bulk gas outside the midplane (which may be in a halo or tidal streamers), which has important implications for observations of [C ii ] outflows at higher redshift. Finally, by comparing the observed ratio of the [C ii ] and CO intensities to models of photodissociation regions, we estimate that the far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation field in the disk is ∼103.5 G 0, in agreement with previous estimates. In the outflow, however, the FUV radiation field is 2–3 orders of magnitudes lower, which may explain the high fraction of [C ii ] arising from the neutral medium in the wind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rotational state resolved photodissociation dynamics of D2O via the C ̃ (010) state has been investigated by using the D-atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight technique combined with a tunable vacuum ultraviolet light source. The D-atom action spectrum of the C ̃ (010) ← X ̃ (000) band and the corresponding time-of-flight (TOF) spectra of D-atom photoproducts formed following the excitation of D2O to individual rotational transition have been measured. By comparison with the action spectrum of the C ̃ (000) ← X ̃ (000) band, the bending vibrational constant of the C ̃ state for D2O can be determined to be v2 = 1041.37 ± 0.71 cm−1. From the TOF spectra, the product kinetic energy spectra, the vibrational state distributions of OD products, and the state resolved anisotropy parameters have been determined. The experimental results indicate a dramatic variation in the OD product state distributions for different rotational excitations. This illuminates that there are two distinctive coupling channels from the C ̃ (010) state to the low-lying electronic states: the homogeneous electronic coupling to the Ã1B1 state, resulting in vibrationally hot OD(X) products, and the Coriolis-type coupling to the B ̃ 1A1 state, producing vibrationally cold but rotationally hot OD(X) and OD(A) products. Furthermore, the three-body dissociation channel is confirmed, which is attributed to the C ̃ → 1A2 or C ̃ → Ã pathway. In comparison with the previous results of D2O photolysis via the C ̃ (000) state, it is found that the v2 vibration of the parent molecule enhances both the vibrational and rotational excitations of OD products. The bond strength and photodissociation dynamics of MgI+ are determined by a combination of theory, photodissociation spectroscopy, and photofragment velocity map imaging. From 17 000 to 21 500 cm−1, the photodissociation spectrum of MgI+ is broad and unstructured; photofragment images in this region show perpendicular anisotropy, which is consistent with absorption to the repulsive wall of the (1) Ω = 1 or (2) Ω = 1 states followed by direct dissociation to ground state products Mg+ (2S) + I (2P3/2). Analysis of photofragment images taken at photon energies near the threshold gives a bond dissociation energy D0(Mg+-I) = 203.0 ± 1.8 kJ/mol (2.10 ± 0.02 eV; 17 000 ± 150 cm−1). At photon energies of 33 000–41 000 cm−1, exclusively I+ fragments are formed. Over most of this region, the formation of I+ is not energetically allowed via one-photon absorption from the ground state of MgI+. Images show the observed product is due to resonance enhanced two-photon dissociation. The photodissociation spectrum from 33 000 to 38 500 cm−1 shows vibrational structure, giving an average excited state vibrational spacing of 227 cm−1. This is consistent with absorption to the (3) Ω = 0+ state from ν = 0, 1 of the (1) Ω = 0+ ground state; from the (3) Ω = 0+ state, absorption of a second photon results in dissociation to Mg* (3P°J) + I+ (3PJ). From 38 500 to 41 000 cm−1, the spectrum is broad and unstructured. We attribute this region of the spectrum to one-photon dissociation of vibrationally hot MgI+ at low energy and ground state MgI+ at higher energy to form Mg (1S) + I+ (3PJ) products. The potential energy curves (PECs) and transition dipole moments (TDMs) of PH+ and PO are computed with the multireference configuration interaction method, and the cross-sections for the radiative association (RA) of PH+ and PO, which is the most efficient way to form the ground states, are presented via the quantum mechanical (QM) theory and computed using ab initio molecular data. The thermal rate coefficients are also expressed and fitted with the standard formula kT=AT300αe−βT in the range of 10 K–15,000 K. Meanwhile, the photodissociation, that is the inverse process of RA for PH+, is also studied, including eight photodissociation channels for the computation of state-resolved cross-sections. Careful comparisons with the Leiden Observatory database are made. Considering the cross-sections mentioned above, the local thermodynamic equilibrium cross-sections at the temperatures of 0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 K are also shown. We expect the results to be helpful for studies of phosphorus chemistry in the interstellar medium and planetary atmospheres.

Photofragment spin–orbit fine-structure branching ratios have long been predicted to depend on the rotational quantum number J′ by theory near the dissociation thresholds of several diatomic molecules, while this has rarely been observed in any photodissociation experiments yet. Here, we measured the fine-structure branching ratios N(2D5/2)/N(2D3/2) produced in the N(2D5/2,3/2) + N(2D5/2,3/2) channel at the b′1Σu+(v = 20) state of 14N2 by using our vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-pump–VUV-probe time-sliced velocity-mapped ion imaging setup. It is found that 14N2 almost exclusively dissociates into the spin–orbit channel N(2D5/2) + N(2D3/2) at low rotational levels and gradually approaches the statistical or diabatic limit by distributing all possible spin–orbit channels at higher rotational levels. The strongly rotationally dependent fine-structure branching ratios should be due to the increasing strength of nonadiabatic Coriolis interaction among various dissociative states in the so-called "recoupling zone" as J′ increases. They are supposed to provide unprecedented information on the near threshold photodissociation dynamics of 14N2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
